East Khasi Hills DC releases book on ‘Children at Risk

Shillong, May 27: Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo, on Thursday launched the book on ‘Children at Risk: A Study conducted in Shillong Urban Agglomeration’ by the Reach Shillong Ministries, Laitumkhrah Shillong at the conference hall of PCI, Shillong.

Launching the book, she said research is a thorough and timely study, and without proper data collection and proper study there will be no successful work.

According to National Commission for Protection of Children Right, and Special Development Goals set by the United Nations, their goals is to provide a conducive environment from education to health and to sports for the children who are mostly known as vulnerable section of the society, added Laloo.

The research is mainly to look after the four main Rights of a child i.e., Right to survival, right to development, right to protection, and Right to participation, explained Dr. Melarishisha Nongrum.

Nongrum informed that ‘Children at Risk’ are basically person who are under 18 years and have experienced an intense chronic risk factor or combination of factor, personal, environmental or relation domain that prevents them from pursuing and fulfilling their potential.

The research was conducted by Reach Shillong Ministries and was supported by the District Child Protection Unit, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya.

The aim of the study is to analyze the experiences of children at risk, to determine the available services from government and non-government organization and recommend suitable intervention for enhancing the well being of children.

The Children from the Lawei Baphyrnai Group Foster Home for Girls and Open Day Shelter Iew Mawlong participated in the program.
