SHILLONG, JUN 14: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said “education remains the most powerful tool for empowerment and societal transformation” while addressing students at the 1st Prof Barrister Pakem Academic Awards organized by the Jaintia Students’ Union in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills district on Saturday.
The event, held to honor the legacy of Late Prof Barrister Pakem, was attended by former NEHU Pro Vice-Chancellor Henry Lamin, Jowai Central MDC Andrew Shullai, Dr Didakamiwan Khonglah, daughter of Prof Pakem, along with parents, awardees, and members of the public.
Speaking after a presentation on Prof Pakem’s contributions to Meghalaya’s educational and intellectual landscape, the Minister congratulated JSU for instituting the award.
He called it “a fitting tribute to one of Meghalaya’s most distinguished academicians and visionaries whose work continues to inspire generations.”
“Education is not just about marks or degrees,” Rymbui told students.
“It is the most powerful tool for empowerment and societal transformation. Pursue academic excellence with dedication, perseverance, and integrity. True success is measured not only by academic achievements but also by character, leadership, and service to society.”
Highlighting the need to recognize merit, he said honoring top students “motivates young people to strive for excellence and builds a culture of healthy competition and lifelong learning.”
He added that “Meghalaya’s future depends on the aspirations and achievements of its youth. Make the most of every opportunity available to you.”
The Minister reaffirmed the state government’s focus on education, citing improved infrastructure, enhanced learning opportunities, skill development initiatives, and policies for quality education for all.
He urged students to “become ambassadors of positive change and contribute to the progress and development of Meghalaya.”
Rymbui also acknowledged the role of parents and teachers, saying the awards celebrated a “collective effort involving students, families, educators, and institutions.”
The programme began with a welcome address by JSU’s Assistant Secretary and concluded with award distribution to meritorious students.
A performance by the Elev Tribe Choir added vibrancy to the event.
The awards marked an effort to celebrate educational excellence while preserving Prof. Pakem’s legacy as a scholar and nation-builder.
