Imphal, Dec 21: In a heart-wrenching scene, an elderly tribal mother was captured in tears as she mourned over the lifeless body of her son at the mass funeral of Kuki-zo victims of hate and violence in Manipur.
The burial took place at Tribal Martyr’s Park in Manipur’s Churachandpur.
The dead bodies were kept in mortuaries for the last eight months.
The old lady brought with her the last gifts for her son, composed of new clothes and some loaves known as cookies (a loaf of bread) from whatever she had left after the devastation she had endured.
Her husband died when she was pregnant with their only child, and that only child is the one she buried today. Because their village has already been burned, she’s in a relief camp.
On December 20, 2023, a solemn ceremony took place at Tribal Martyr’s Park in Manipur, where the bodies of 87 members of the Kuki community were laid to rest.
The violence was initially sparked by a dispute over affirmative action measures, specifically the demand by the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status, which led to peaceful protests by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur.
