Dibrugarh, May 30: An adult elephant was found dead due to electrocution in Ouguri village under the Lakhipathar forest range of Assam’s Tinsukia district, authorities confirmed on Thursday. Forest officials suspect the death occurred at least two days ago.
The carcass, discovered in the Digboi Forest Division, showed signs of decomposition. Preliminary investigations revealed that the elephant likely strayed out of the West Block of the Upper Dehing Reserve Forest in search of food and came in contact with a live electric wire illegally set up by a local tea garden owner to deter wildlife.
“We have collected samples and started a detailed investigation. Initial findings suggest the elephant died due to electrocution,” said BV Sandeep, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Digboi Forest Division. He confirmed that the elephant likely died about 40 hours before the carcass was recovered.

In a disturbing development, the tusks of the elephant were missing. “We haven’t recovered the tusks yet. The garden owner has confessed to laying the wire and has been arrested under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act,” the DFO added.
This tragic incident underscores the growing man-elephant conflict in the region. Experts attribute this to rapid habitat fragmentation, including illegal construction and encroachment that block traditional elephant corridors in Tinsukia. With limited access to movement routes and food, elephants are increasingly straying into human-dominated landscapes—often with fatal consequences.
