Ex-servicemen rally in Tura focuses on financial stability post-retirement

Tura, Dec 10: The annual Ex-Servicemen Rally 2024 for the Garo Hills region focused on ensuring financial stability and support for ex-servicemen in their post-retirement lives. Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin advocated for suitably employment for ex-servicemen, suggesting their enrolment in Chief Minister Elevate Programme to upgrade their skills and turn them into entrepreneurs.

The rally was held on December 9 – 10 at the SMELC premises in Tura. Organized under the aegis of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare Meghalaya, with logistical support from HQ 101 Area, the event brought together approximately 300 ex-servicemen, their families, dependents, widows, and five Veer Naris.

The rally was graced by Kharkutta MLA, Rupert Momin, as the Chief Guest. In his address, Momin praised the ex-servicemen for their invaluable contributions to the nation and called upon citizens to honor their sacrifices. He said that most Armed Forces personnel retire at young age and it is the responsibility of the Government to ensure they are suitably employed to address the financial requirement of their families. “The Chief Minister Elevate Programme of our State can be utilized to upgrade their skills as well as resources to hone their entrepreneurship,” he suggested.

Colonel Gautam Rai, Director Sainik Welfare Meghalaya said that the Rally in Tura has been organized so as to mitigate the trouble faced by the ex-servicemen and their families living in Garo Hills. He said that it will be his endeavour to ensure that all the ex-servicemen and their families get all the support they require to ensure that their post-retirement life is as hassle free as possible.

The event served as a platform to honor and support ex-servicemen, Veer Naris, and disabled soldiers, and to express solidarity and demonstrate that they remain inseparable members of the Armed Forces fraternity even after retirement.
