Shillong, Aug 6:Â The ongoing Manipur violence which started on May 3 has resulted in widespread unrest and turmoil in the region. The clashes between different ethnic groups and communities have escalated, leading to loss of lives and displacement of thousands of people.
Tension continues in several parts of the state following as fresh violence erupted in the Bishnupur area of the state recently, leading to the deaths of three people from the Meitei community.
Media reports said that several people from both the communities have gone missing during the ethnic clashes in Bishnupur. Several people have also fled to army camps after houses were burnt down across the district.
More than 150 people have lost their lives in the ethnic violence in the state since May 3.
Here is what BJP MLA said on fresh violence:
On Saturday, Manipur BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh, son-in-law of Chief Minister N Biren Singh lashed out the central security forces for huge security lapses in the attack in Bishnupur district, He also demanded action against the paramilitary force personnel for negligence in duty.
Why Manipur Violence?
On May 3, members of the Kuki and Naga tribes launched a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’Â against the Meiteis.
This came in April after Manipur High Court recommended the government to consider the demand of Meiteis special benefits and set a deadline of mid-May.
Meiteis account for almost half of the state’s population and have traditionally lived in Manipur’s more prosperous valley .
With this, the Meiteis have also got better access to employment and economic opportunities when compared to the Nagas and Kukis.
This development imbalance has become one on the most important and major contention and rivalry between the ethnic groups.
Why Manipur govt failed to control the situation in the state?
Despite knowing the risks, Manipur’s state government led by BJP’s N.Biren Singh has failed to control the situation. The state failed to put up the security measures in place ahead of the tribal solidarity march that was held on on May 3, resulting to situation which had gone out of control.
Despite deployment of security forces and other forces in the state after May 3, yet news about violence erupts almost everyday.
How to end this clashes or put a full stop on it?
The prime minister Narendra Modi who is one of the most admired and liked leader in Manipur, he had received votes from both the Meitei and Kuki in large numbers in two consecutive elections. He could have simply spoken and appealed for peace. Although, PM was criticised by the Oppositions and several others for keeping mum on the situation in the state finally opened up after a video of two women being paraded naked had gone viral on social media.
The violence can still be put on hold only if PM Modi speaks up and holds a detailed discussion in the Parliament in the presence of Opposition leaders.
