Fake doctors thriving in Assam: Dhubri Police arrests impostor practitioner

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 9: In a continuing crackdown on unqualified medical practitioners, Dhubri police have arrested a fake doctor who was practising in the district without any valid medical degree or registration, posing a serious risk to public health.

The arrest followed credible intelligence inputs that the accused had been illegally treating patients. Police said such operations are part of a broader statewide drive against fake doctors, with several arrests already made across multiple districts of Assam.

In an official post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday evening, Dhubri police stated that the accused was “playing with lives without a valid degree or registration.” The action underscores growing concern over the proliferation of unqualified individuals masquerading as doctors, especially in vulnerable and rural areas where access to verified healthcare remains limited.

Issuing a strong public advisory, the police cautioned: “Your health is not a gamble. Always verify a doctor’s credentials before treatment. Stay alert, stay safe!” The post tagged the Chief Minister’s Office, Assam Police, and senior officials, highlighting the gravity of the offence.

Officials noted that such illegal practices not only violate medical and legal norms but also pose grave threats to patient safety. Incorrect diagnosis, misuse of medicines, and delayed referral to qualified professionals can lead to severe complications and, in extreme cases, loss of life.

“Fake doctors and quacks are thriving in Assam, practising without any licence. In recent times, several such individuals have been identified and arrested for risking patients’ lives. In rural areas, people often turn to quacks and fake doctors due to lack of awareness and access,” a police official said.

Medical experts have repeatedly warned that treatment by unqualified practitioners can result in irreversible harm, stressing the urgent need for public vigilance and stronger enforcement.
