Merit-based recruitment brings new unarmed branch officers into the Meghalaya Police
Tura, Jan 9: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday formally handed over appointment letters to 76 newly recruited Unarmed Branch (UB) Sub-Inspectors of the Meghalaya Police at a ceremony held at the 2nd MLP Battalion headquarters in Goeragre, marking a key addition to the state’s policing strength.
Addressing the recruits, the Chief Minister described Sub-Inspectors as the government’s “ears and eyes at the grassroots,” underscoring their frontline role in maintaining law and order, gathering intelligence, and ensuring effective administration.
Urging professionalism and resilience, Sangma reminded the officers to remain grateful and committed even during challenging assignments, noting that the responsibilities they now shoulder were once aspirations they prayed for.
Reaffirming the government’s focus on institutional integrity, Sangma said the recruitment process was conducted fairly and transparently. He encouraged the new officers to take their forthcoming training seriously, calling it the foundation that would guide them throughout their careers.
Providing details of the rigorous selection process, Idashisha Nongrang, Director General of Police, said 21,007 candidates had initially applied, of whom 9,507 appeared for the Physical Efficiency Test (PET). Subsequently, 1,970 candidates were shortlisted for the written examination, culminating in the final selection of 76 officers.
Highlighting the academic strength of the batch, the DGP noted that a majority of the recruits come from technical backgrounds, with 23 per cent holding post-graduate degrees, reflecting a growing emphasis on skill and education within the state police force.
