Tura, April 28: A man accused of posing as a Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) employee to dupe residents has been arrested by police in West Garo Hills, with investigators now probing multiple similar cases linked to him.
The accused, identified as Kissan B. Marak, a resident of Ampati in South West Garo Hills district, was apprehended by a team from Jengjal Police Station on April 27 after allegedly evading arrest for a considerable period.
According to police, the case dates back to an incident reported on April 10, when the accused visited a residence in the Nengkalgree area under Jengjal Police Station and falsely claimed to be a MePDCL official. He allegedly collected ₹6,750 from the complainant on the pretext of electricity bill payment. Subsequent verification revealed he had no affiliation with the power utility.
A case of cheating by impersonation was registered, leading to his eventual arrest.
Multiple victims, wider trail
During investigation, police found that Marak had allegedly targeted several others using the same method—posing as MePDCL staff and collecting money fraudulently.
Officials said that at least six additional cases have already been registered against him across different police stations in West Garo Hills district. Authorities also suspect that more victims may exist but have not come forward.
Police have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid making payments to individuals without proper verification.
“People who may have been cheated in a similar manner are requested to come forward and lodge complaints,” the statement said, adding that public cooperation is crucial to uncover the full extent of the fraud.
Authorities also appealed to citizens to report suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station or control room.
