‘Felt isolated’ Pradyut Bordoloi explains exit from Congress and his switch to BJP

Must read

Guwahati, March 21: Senior Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi on Saturday publicly explained his decision to switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite having been named the Congress candidate from Dispur.

Opening his first press conference after joining the BJP with a candid admission, Bordoloi said a growing “trust deficit” within the Congress had pushed him to the margins over the past few years.

“I never wanted to tell a sad story or project myself as a victim. But for some time, I had been feeling neglected and isolated. There was a clear trust deficit, especially after the party’s internal elections. Gradually, I was pushed to the background in every manner,” he said.

Without directly naming leaders, Bordoloi indicated that internal party dynamics had made his position untenable.

“I do not want to level allegations unnecessarily, but there was complete mistrust. I found it impossible to function in such a vitiated atmosphere. That is why I decided to leave,” he added.

Projecting immediate traction from his move, Bordoloi claimed that his entry into the BJP drew significant support from grassroots workers.
“Nearly 500 youth and party workers came to receive me at the airport and later joined the BJP at Vajpayee Bhawan. Many Congress workers are feeling demotivated due to the prevailing atmosphere within the party,” he said.

He further noted that workers from districts such as Nagaon and Darrang had reached out to him, expressing dissatisfaction with the Congress leadership—signalling deeper unrest within the party’s ranks.

Framing his ideological stance, Bordoloi asserted that his politics has consistently focused on inclusive development.

“I have never engaged in appeasement politics. I have always worked for the downtrodden, irrespective of community—those who are economically, socially, and politically deprived,” he said.

Bordoloi’s switch underscores the fluid political landscape in Assam ahead of 2026, with shifting loyalties and internal dissent increasingly shaping the contours of what is expected to be a closely watched electoral battle.
