Kohima, Aug 7: The Five Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) has strongly rejected the Nagaland cabinet’s recent decision to constitute a seven-member Job Reservation Commission (JRC), calling it a “repetition” of earlier measures that fail to address their core demands.
The state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday, approved the formation of the JRC, which will be headed by a retired senior IAS officer from the Nagaland cadre. The Commission is expected to include one member each from the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO), the Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC), and the Tenyimi Union Nagaland (TUN), along with three official members — the administrative heads of the Political and Administrative Reforms Department, the Home Department, and the Law and Justice Department.
However, the CoRRP, which has been spearheading a months-long agitation demanding a comprehensive review of the 48-year-old job reservation policy, expressed disappointment with the cabinet’s move. They argued that the formation of the JRC merely echoed the state government’s earlier resolution passed on June 12, which also failed to address the concerns raised by the five tribes, particularly on the issue of Backward Tribe (BT) reservations.
The Committee said it would soon convene a joint meeting with the apex bodies of the five tribes to decide the next course of action.
The CoRRP and its supporting tribal bodies have maintained that the existing reservation policy, which has been in place since 1977, no longer aligns with the present socio-economic and educational status of various communities in the state and requires a thorough overhaul.
