Guwahati, June 3: A severe wave of flash floods has struck Diyun circle in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, leaving over 15 families homeless and causing widespread destruction. The villages of Dharmapur I, II, and III have been particularly hard-hit, with residents losing homes, agricultural land, and livestock. Many have sought refuge in relief camps, expressing uncertainty about their future.
“We have lost our land due to the floods. Our cattle were washed away in the river, and now we don’t know where to go,” said a flood victim. Another villager lamented the absence of local officials, stating, “No MLA or district administration officials have come to inquire about the flood victims. Only the 11 Assam Rifles have provided some relief.”
The Buri-Dihing River’s overflow has not only affected villages but also critical infrastructure. On May 31, approximately 50% of the Makantong bridge on the Trans-Arunachal Highway was washed away, severing the vital link between Miao and Bordumsa subdivisions. This disruption has significantly impacted local farmers, who rely on this route to transport their produce to markets in Assam’s Tinsukia district. The increased transportation costs and delays are expected to lead to reduced incomes and market instability for the agricultural community.
In the Miao subdivision, tourist resorts such as Zupra and River Cafe have been submerged, leading to substantial economic losses. The Industrial Training Institute in Balinong has also suffered extensive damage, with hostels and staff quarters destroyed, leaving students without accommodation.
