Floods in Assam: Residents left stranded without aid

Morigaon, July 07: Izraful Ali a resident of Mayong in Morigaon district in Assam echoes the grouse against politicians when it comes to looking after them during floods.

Izraful Ali is living with family members in Khandakti village under Mayong in the Morigaon district, which is dependent on farming. But on the contrary, all farm land now has gone under water.

“We cannot go out of the house due to the strong flow of water. There is a relief camp but it is situated at some distance. Government officials have not come yet, some leaders came at the time of voting, but no one came at the time of need. We are solely dependent on farming”, Ali rues.

More worries are in store as the Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning for heavy rain very likely at isolated places over Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Cachar and Karimganj.’

A total of 29 districts and 107 Revenue Circles have been affected by floods in the state which has claimed 58 people till now. Nearly 24 lakh people have been affected till now. More than 50,000 people are housed in 293 relief camps.

The situation is bad in Morigaon district as villages like Khandakati village and Pabhakati are submerged in flood for 5 to 6 days.

Many houses are still submerged in water and farming has been completely destroyed by the floods.

Many of the people along with their pets are living on the roads and on higher land.

“About 200 people are living in the relief camp, no government official has come here till now. There is no food facility, there is no water for drinking. We have been submerged in water for four to five days, we need facilities and food including drinking water” says Saklin Mustak a resident.
