Tura, March 16: Former MDC from Balachanda constituency, Sofior Rahman, was arrested by Meghalaya Police in the early hours of Monday in connection with the recent violence that erupted in the Garo Hills region.
According to police sources, Rahman was picked up at around 1:00 AM from his residence at New Bhaitbari under Rajabala Police Station in West Garo Hills district by a special team from Tura Police Station.
The arrest was confirmed by Abraham T. Sangma, Superintendent of Police of West Garo Hills.
The SP said the arrest was made in connection with allegations of inciting communal disharmony in the Garo Hills region.
Police sources further stated that several social media posts allegedly made by Rehman had contributed to escalating communal tension in the area. The posts were widely circulated and are believed to have aggravated the situation that eventually led to unrest and violence in parts of Garo Hills.
Meanwhile, multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) have reportedly been filed against Rahman and former MLA S. G. Esmatur Mominin, accusing them of making inflammatory statements and allegedly provoking actions that contributed to the communal disturbances in the region.
