Guwahati, Mar 10: Four Congress workers were arrested by Assam Police while allegedly transporting 10 lakh copies of the Opposition party’s “20-point chargesheet” against the BJP-led state government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to sources, the Congress workers were detained during the transportation of the printed copies, which were reportedly meant for distribution during the campaign for next month’s Assembly elections.
The “chargesheet” was released in Guwahati on February 19 by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi along with other party leaders.
In the document, the Congress levelled several allegations against the ruling dispensation, including claims of “massive corruption” and failure to fulfil pre-poll promises. It also alleged that Sarma had acquired around 12,000 bighas of land in the names of his family members.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi said the copies were seized by personnel from Dispur Police Station in Guwahati.
“The BJP is running an authoritarian regime and preventing the Opposition from taking the chargesheet against the government to the people. But the people of Assam are now aware of their corruption and will give a fitting reply in 2026,” Gogoi said.According to an order issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal, the decision was taken in view of reported opposition to the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC elections, which could potentially lead to obstruction, intimidation and disruption of normal life.
The curfew will remain in force from 12:00 a.m. on March 10 to 12:00 a.m. on March 11 across the West Garo Hills district.
Under the order, the movement of vehicles may be restricted, and carrying or concealing lathis, sticks, stones, firearms, missiles or any lethal weapons has been prohibited. The order also prohibits the unlawful assembly of five or more persons and any attempt to obstruct the lawful functioning of shops, establishments, and offices.
The district administration warned that any violation of the order will invite penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant provisions of law.
Officials said the order was issued ex parte due to the emergent nature of the situation and urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth conduct of the upcoming GHADC elections.
