Garbage avalanche in Tura: Massive efforts underway to clear garbage, prevent river contamination

Tura, June 25: The West Garo Hills district administration has initiated operation to clear the tonnes of garbage from near the Ringre stream flowing next to the Rongkhon Songgital dumping ground adjacent to Tura Town, following the garbage avalanche on June 22, 2023 due to torrential rains.

The Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Jagdish Chelani, said heavy rains caused mound-slide to roll down the hill, bringing a significant amount of garbage dangerously close to the nearby Ringre stream. Prompt action was taken upon receiving the morning reports of this alarming situation.

Multiple teams comprising personnel from the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) and equipped with JCBs (hydraulic excavators) were deployed to clear the garbage from the stream’s banks and safely restore it to its original position. To prevent future occurrences and ensure the protection of the river streams, a retention wall made of chicken mesh was installed, he informed.

“The operation has been ongoing day and night for the past three days,” stated Chelani. “We are pleased to report that, as of last night, the entire retaining structure has been erected, and a significant amount of garbage has been removed from the stream’s vicinity,” he added.

The district administration is now planning to reinforce the retention wall throughout the entire dumping yard. Additionally, they are devising a comprehensive strategy to tackle the issue of legacy waste and its proper disposal.

The DC further informed that the State government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, intends to engage a specialized agency to handle the recommendation, treatment, and removal of legacy waste from the area.

The proposed facility will convert the legacy waste into refuse fuel, which can be utilized by various industries, including cement production. This innovative approach not only addresses the waste issue but also allows for the reclamation of the affected land. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish a scientifically managed landfill site that prioritizes waste segregation and treatment through composting and other advanced techniques.

Deputy Commissioner Chelani also emphasized on the importance of raising awareness about waste segregation to ensure a more sustainable waste management system. “Unsegregated waste remains a significant challenge for our district and the state,” he acknowledged. “In the future, we aim to promote greater awareness alongside our scientific waste management efforts, encouraging residents to separate waste into different categories,” he said.
