New bridge links West and South Garo Hills, while key road project strengthens NH-51–NH-62 connectivity
Jijikapara (West Garo Hills), April 17: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday inaugurated a crucial bridge over the Bugi River and launched road widening works in West Garo Hills, marking a significant push to strengthen connectivity in the Garo Hills region.
The projects include the Sonagre–Jijikapara Road Bridge (Bridge No. 5/7) and the widening of the Kujikura–Dimapara road into a double lane, both aimed at improving access between remote villages and key highways.
Calling the bridge a “long-felt necessity,” Sangma said residents had struggled for years due to poor connectivity. “This bridge was not just important, it was essential for the people here who faced immense challenges in staying connected,” he said.
The 90-metre bridge over the Bugi River, constructed under the World Bank-funded Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP), links West and South Garo Hills, effectively closing a critical infrastructure gap. It is expected to benefit over 6,000 residents across multiple villages in both districts.
Highlighting broader infrastructure efforts, the Chief Minister said the state has significantly ramped up investment in road connectivity over the past eight years. “Our focus has been to ensure even the most remote areas are linked to growth centres,” he noted, adding that development initiatives are being implemented with an inclusive approach targeting underserved regions.
Sangma also underscored collaboration with the Centre and partner agencies in executing major infrastructure projects across the state.
In a related development, he reiterated the Cabinet’s recent decision to recognise Garo and Khasi as official languages, saying the move would enhance inclusivity in governance. “This will empower our people, allowing use of mother tongues in legislative debates and competitive examinations,” he said.
The Kujikura–Dimapara road project, covering a 4-km stretch, will improve connectivity between NH-51 and NH-62, benefiting over 2,600 residents and strengthening inter-highway access in the region.
