Garo Hills missionary nun dies

TURA, Oct 16: Tragedy has struck the Catholic Church in Garo Hills who lost a long serving missionary nun, Sister Salomy Vettickal, after she breathed her last in a Guwahati hospital on Thursday after suffering from severe jaundice and organ complications.

Sister Salomy Vettickal was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Guwahati on Saturday.

Belonging to the order of Sisters of Mary Immaculate (SMI) congregation, Sister Salomy had served the church in the parishes of Dumnikura in South Garo Hills border with Bangladesh, Selsella, Rajabala, and Dadenggre in West Garo Hills district.

Born on 26th March, 1951 she joined the church order in 1975 and spent the most part of her missionary work in the Garo Hills.

She fell ill with a medical condition of high jaundice that further led to multiple complications leading to her demise.

The Diocese of Tura, Catholic Church has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family members of Late Sister Salomy, the congregation of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate and those close to her.
