Guwahati, Aug 19: The Gauhati High Court on Monday directed 74 families living in the Doyang and Nambor reserve forests in Golaghat district to vacate forest land within seven days.
The court said the state government could proceed with eviction if the families failed to comply.
A division bench of Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury, while hearing appeals filed by the encroachers against the eviction notice, clarified that the court had already granted them an extended period to leave the forest area.
Earlier, on August 5, the bench had extended the deadline till August 14, directing the appellants to either prove their claim of land rights or vacate the land.
The court also instructed the state government to establish a proper mechanism to prevent further illegal entry into the reserve forests.
“Constant surveillance of the reserve forest area would also be required to ensure that encroachers do not return and disturb the ecological balance,” the bench observed, adding that periodic reviews would help create an institutional system to curb unauthorised occupation.
