Gaurav Gogoi slams govt on worsening connectivity in Barak Valley

Must read

Guwahati, July 28: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday expressed serious concern over the worsening road and rail connectivity in Barak Valley and pledged to raise the issue during the current session of Parliament.

Speaking to the media in Hailakandi, Gogoi criticized the deteriorating infrastructure across the three Barak Valley districts—Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi—and accused the government of neglecting the region’s nearly 50 lakh residents.

“The state of road connectivity in Barak Valley is alarming. We will place a formal representation in Parliament and urge Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to take immediate action,” Gogoi said.

He pointed out that poor road conditions affect not only locals in Barak Valley but also residents of Tripura and Mizoram, who rely on this route for surface connectivity to the rest of India.

Highlighting the long-standing demand for a flyover at Badarpurghat, Gogoi said frequent traffic congestion and crumbling roads cause major delays, often forcing passengers to miss their train journeys.

Beyond infrastructure, he expressed alarm over recurring floods in Barak Valley and criticized the government for failing to treat the situation as a humanitarian crisis. He also condemned the dismal state of government healthcare across the region.

Notably, the National Highway 6 (NH-6)—a lifeline for the region—is in critical condition, with innumerable potholes and damaged flanks rendering large stretches unmotorable. Commuters reportedly take over three hours to cover the mere 50 km distance to Silchar.
