GHADC elections: Issue of non-tribal voters needs broader consensus, says CM

SHILLONG, JAN 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has stated that the government has not yet decided on the dates for holding the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).

“We have not decided yet (on the matter). A cabinet memo is being prepared. Maybe we will take it up in the next cabinet,” Sangma said when asked about the elections.

Regarding the issue of non-tribal voters, Sangma said, “This have been there in the past, it is from 1952 the Electoral Rolls which includes non-tribals voters has always been there.”

He emphasized that the matter requires large-scale discussion and engagement with people, adding, “it is an issue that requires large and wide scale discussion and engagement with people, bring people together and then consensus manner take a call on this.”

Sangma stated that given the impending elections, the government has proceeded with the existing electoral rolls.

“As of now the elections are around the corner and therefore we went ahead with the existing electoral rolls that were there,” he said.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the issue needs broader consensus and debate. “But in a larger scale as I said it requires a lot of discussion, debate and building of consensus and once we engage then only we will be able to take this forward,” he added .
