Tura, June 9: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on Tuesday launched a major enforcement drive against establishments operating without valid Trading by Non-Tribal (TNT) licences and those defaulting on professional tax payments, sealing several commercial establishments across Tura, including the ICICI Bank branch at Hawakhana.
The action sent a strong message that compliance with TNT licensing and tax regulations is mandatory for all businesses operating within the Council’s jurisdiction, irrespective of their size or profile.
Several shops and business establishments across the town also faced action during the drive as GHADC intensified efforts to enforce TNT licensing norms and strengthen revenue collection.
A Trading by Non-Tribal (TNT) licence, issued by the GHADC, is mandatory for non-tribal individuals, firms and institutions conducting business in the Sixth Schedule areas of Garo Hills. The licensing system is designed to regulate trade, safeguard the interests of indigenous tribal communities and serve as an important source of revenue for the Council.
Officials said the drive was aimed at improving compliance with existing regulations and ensuring that businesses fulfil their statutory obligations. They warned that inspections and enforcement measures would continue and that strict action would be taken against establishments that fail to obtain valid licences, regularise their documents or clear outstanding dues.
GHADC has urged all traders, business owners and institutions operating within its jurisdiction to comply with licensing requirements and fulfil their tax obligations to avoid penalties, sealing of premises and disruption of business operations.
