Gold biscuits seized from Garo Hills highway

TURA, Sept 1: A man has been arrested with four gold biscuits weighting almost half a kg during a surprise checking on the highway in Garo Hills at Rari point on Wednesday evening, police confirmed.

The accused Hamidul Haque aged 27 and hailing from Cooch Behar in West Bengal was coming from Tura and proceeding to Guwahati in a bolero pik up when police caught him.

“We were conducting naka checking for contraband and other illegal items yesterday between Rari and Bajengdoba when our team stopped a bolero pik up that did not have a number plate. While checking the vehicle documents and conducting a search for any illegal items, we found the gold biscuits hidden inside,” informed North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Shailendra Bamaniya.

The market value of the seized gold is estimated to be approximately Rs 25 lakh.

The accused, during questioning could not provide any detail or document pertaining to purchase of the gold and has since been arrested and sent to court.
