Shillong, Aug 28: Revenue and Disaster Minister Kyrmen Shylla has assured that the government is working hard to provide necessary support to people affected by floods in Meghalaya.

Speaking to media persons on Thursday, Shylla said that while rain is a blessing, it also poses challenges, and the department is doing its best to mitigate the impact.

The minister said that the department is well-prepared to respond to natural and man-made calamities.

He however said that while it’s impossible to achieve hundred percent success, collective efforts can make a significant difference. Shylla mentioned that the department is working to provide necessities to people, especially travelers, during flood-related disruptions.

Shylla shared his personal experience of being stuck in traffic due to flash floods on the road from Guwahati to Meghalaya. He emphasized the need for proper drainage systems to prevent such incidents.

The minister noted that even on roads, flash floods can occur due to poor drainage, and it’s essential to address this issue.

Stating that he is not an expert in this field, the minister however stressed the importance of finding solutions to the drainage problem.

He said that the government’s engineers try their best to construct infrastructure, but there is a need to look into drainage issues to prevent flood-related challenges.

The minister reassured that the government is committed to providing support and necessities to people affected by floods.

According to him, collective efforts are essential to mitigate the impact of floods and ensure the safety of travelers.
