Shillong, Dec 13: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University will now be changed to Captain Williamson Sangma State University as approved by the cabinet on Tuesday.
The necessary amendments and addition of subjects has been made and has been approved by the cabinet and the ordinance has been passed on Tuesday, mentioned Sangma.
Since Meghalaya does not have a state university and all colleges are affiliated to NEHU, Cabinet felt necessary to change the Technical University to a State University and allow colleges within the State to have the opportunity to be affiliated to the new State University.

“This is basically been done because the State does not have a State University and hence we find that all the colleges have to affiliate to NEHU and hence since we already had the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University the cabinet decided that we will expand the scope of the technical university into a State University,” the CM informed.
The colleges in the state will then have an option to affiliate to the State University rather than to NEHU. The main aim is to extend the available State University to further expand from not only technical but to also include other departments as well.
“Once that happens, other provisions at the national level including the CUET exams which were necessary then in that case would not be applicable anymore once these Colleges affiliate to the Captain Williamson Sangma State University,” he added.
The cabinet also decided to start BA and B.Com courses by creating 39 posts and other non-teaching staff posts in the College of Teacher’s Education, Tura.
“This is being done as per the new education policy which requires the colleges that are there to have multi discipline and hence in order to enable the College of Teacher’s Education to be able to move forward in the lines of the new education policy these courses will start BA and B.Com courses,” Sangma said.
This is being done as per the New Education Policy which requires colleges to have multidiscipline courses & hence in order to enable the College of Teacher Education to move forward in line with NEP, these courses will start.
