Shillong, June 17: The state government has earmarked Rs 7.3 crore for beautification and desiltation of the iconic Ward’s Lake to further enhance its potential as a tourist destination.
Informing this on Tuesday, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said, “Through the department of Urban Affairs, I am glad to share with you that an amount of Rs 7.3 crore has already been earmarked for the work of beautification of the lake. This beautification would involve treatment of the water what is known as oxygenation.”
“As far as enhancing the potential of Ward’s Lake as a tourist destination, we are going ahead with the desiltation of the lake,” he added.
The minister informed that the Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) has been issued and within the next two weeks or so work on the ground will start. “This work once taken up, the cleaning and beautification of Ward’s Lake you will see once completed, the water will be sparkling clean and with this use of technology that is known as Nano bubble, it will help to oxygenate the lake,” he said.
The minister further announced that Rs 4 crore has also been earmarked for starting the work for light and sound show at Ward’s Lake.
“By the end of the monsoon season, we should also be able to begin work for the light and sound show at Ward’s Lake and an amount of roughly Rs 4 crore has been earmarked and the process of tendering this particular project will start soon. Work on the ground will begin by end August or September. The project will take roughly six-eight months until completion,” he said.
Further, Lyngdoh said the government will also go for construction of toilets for use general public at 10-12 tourist destinations. “Roughly 10-12 locations have been identified and these toilets will have a sanction of about Rs 25 lakh per toilets,” he added.
