Tura, May 15: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Assam State Zone, has strongly condemned the killing of Christian Baptist church leaders in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district and demanded immediate justice for the victims.

In a press release issued on Friday, the student body described the May 13 killings as “savage and barbaric,” stating that the attack targeted not only the individuals but also their religious faith and service to society.

According to the statement, the victims were members of the Thadou Baptist Association of India and the United Baptist Council. The organisation termed the incident a “grave crime against humanity” and urged the Manipur government to launch a swift and transparent investigation to identify and arrest those responsible.

The GSU also demanded the harshest punishment for the perpetrators and called for stronger security measures, including additional deployment of security personnel and intensified police patrolling in vulnerable areas to safeguard civilians, minorities and church leaders.

Further, the union appealed to Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, to intervene and press the Manipur government for a fair and speedy probe. It also urged the Centre to ensure adequate protection for tribal minorities and take steps to prevent armed insurgent groups from crossing state borders and threatening peace in the Northeast.

Expressing solidarity with the bereaved families and tribal communities in Manipur, the GSU reiterated its demand for justice and condemned what it called the “brutal killing of innocent church leaders.”
