Tura holds candlelight vigil for church leaders killed in Manipur ambush

Must read

Tura, May 14: Grief and outrage marked a candlelight vigil in Tura on Thursday evening as hundreds gathered to mourn three senior church leaders killed in a militant ambush in Manipur earlier this week.

The vigil, held at the ABDK Mission Compound and organised by ABDK and Krima IV, paid tribute to Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou, Pastor Paoguolen Sitlhou, and Pastor Kaigoulun Lhouvum of the Thadou Baptist Association, who were shot dead on May 13 while returning from a peace and reconciliation assembly in Manipur.

Religious leaders, church members, and residents assembled in solidarity with the bereaved families and the wider Thadou Baptist community, condemning the violence that claimed the lives of the church leaders.

Special prayers were led by Rev. Waipin K. Marak, Rev. Dr. Bethelson Arengh, and Rev. Dilseng M. Sangma, while a moving special song by Ebrina Ch. Momin added to the sombre atmosphere of the gathering.

The highlight of the evening was the “Candle So·dilna” ceremony led by Rev. Shellisa R. Marak of Tura Baptist Church, during which mourners lit candles in memory of the slain leaders and as a symbol of peace and resilience.

Organisers said the vigil was aimed at expressing solidarity with the victims’ families and reaffirming the community’s commitment to peace amid growing concerns over violence in Manipur.

The gathering ended with calls for justice, reconciliation, and an end to the cycle of violence affecting the region.
