Guwahati, Aug 10: Guwahati International Airport has won The International Architecture Award® 2025 from The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies — a global recognition celebrating design excellence.
Organised annually since 2004, The International Architecture Awards honour the best new buildings, landscape architecture, and planning projects worldwide, recognising architects, landscape designers, and urban planners of outstanding achievement.
The airport’s new terminal, designed by the Mumbai-based architectural firm NUDES and operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, blends modern infrastructure with deep cultural symbolism from Assam. Inspired by the resilience of bamboo, the grace of orchids, and the organic flow of rivers, the design pays tribute to the region’s biodiversity and heritage while aiming for world-class passenger experience.
The airport is one of the winners for the award in Airports and Transportation Centers category. There are six other airports from around the world who have been declared winners.
“This isn’t just about global recognition — it’s about how Assam’s spirit is embedded in a space the world will pass through and remember,” said Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota.

“Inspired by Assam’s rich ecological and cultural heritage, the design draws from the resilience of bamboo, the delicacy of orchids, and the organic beauty of nature — creating an international airport experience that is rooted in place” says Nuru Karim of NUDES architectural firm.
The terminal incorporates engineered bamboo and other sustainable materials to reduce reliance on carbon-intensive construction. Bamboo and orchids — both iconic to Assam’s identity — serve as primary design motifs. Assam is home to over 600 orchid species, making them an emblem of its lush environment.
The layout is designed for 10 million passengers annually, ensuring smooth operations, efficient passenger flow, and reduced congestion. Arrivals and departures are separated for ease of movement, with modern check-in zones, self-service kiosks, and well-planned queuing areas to manage peak traffic.
The award citation praised the project for embedding “the essence of Assam and the Northeast into the airport’s architecture,” creating an environment that is sustainable, culturally distinctive, and globally relevant.
With nearly half of global CO₂ emissions linked to buildings, the project’s sustainability-focused design positions Guwahati International Airport as both a gateway to Northeast India and a model for environmentally conscious infrastructure.
