Harijan Panchayat to wait till Govt finalise plan on relocation

Must read

Shillong, July 14: The Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) on Thursday said it will wait for the blueprint which will indicate the clear proposal of the state government for relocation of the 342 families of the Sweeper’s Colony from Them Iew Mawlong, before taking a call on the matter.

“We will see when the government calls us and give us a detailed report in the form of a blueprint. That time we will see and we will discuss with local residents and decide whether to accept or reject it,” HPC secretary Gurjit Singh said over phone.

This came a day after the Meghalaya High Court was informed that the administration has prepared a blueprint for allotment of three acre of land near the RP Chest Hospital for construction of a multi-storeyed building housing flats.

“It is hoped that the matter receives a quietus upon the government proposal being found satisfactory by the applicant,” the court had said while hearing a petition of the HPC on Wednesday.

Singh however said that many including NGOs, the headman and local MLA Mohendro Rapsang of the area had already filed objections against the government’s move to allot land near the RP Chest Hospital.

“Government knows everything and deputy CM already told local MLA that they will see other areas also but now they are giving submission that the government has identified the land so it is not clear actually,” he said.

He further reminded that on April 25, the HPC had agreed to be relocated from the Them Iew Mawlong on conditions that the state government should provide 200 square meters of land to each of the 342 families within the European ward besides bearing the cost of construction of their homes.

“However that land (near RP Chest Hospital) is not under the European Ward. Therefore, we will discuss because as per the resolution of our society, we demand land be given in the European Ward,” Singh said.

He also informed that after the objection from the MLA and headman of the area, the urban affairs department has decided to identify two-three places for relocation, which then they will indicate in the proposed blueprint.

The HPC secretary further expressed concern over the delay of the government to come up with the blueprint.

“They are taking time because now the election is coming they will try to ignore this issue because if they do anything wrong they will lose the election,” he said.
