Guwahati, April 9: Voting proceeded normally at the Dakhin Gaon High School polling centre on Thursday, but many voters said the day felt different without Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
In previous elections, Garg had visited the booth with his family to cast his vote, drawing attention among voters, particularly the youth. This year, his absence did not go unnoticed.
Md. Tufizuddin, an assistant teacher at the school and currently serving as Booth Level Officer (BLO), said he had seen Garg vote at the centre several times. “I have been working here since 1997 and as BLO since 2010. He used to come with his family, and I even guided him earlier. Today he is not here, and I feel disappointed,” he said.
Young voters also spoke about the absence. Ameer said many in his generation look up to Garg. “Last time, we saw him here with his family. This time he is not here, and it feels emotional. We are taking part in the voting process, but we also want justice,” he said.
Another voter, Aayesha, said people are hoping for change. “We want improvement in issues like waterlogging and also justice. This time we expect better governance,” she said.
For many at the polling station, Garg’s absence was noticeable, though voter turnout and participation remained steady.
