Heavy rains trigger landslide, wash away part of NH-6 at Lumshnong; vehicles fall into caved-in section

Shillong, June 16: A part of the National Highway 6 (NH-6) under Lumshnong Police Station area of East Jaintia Hills district caved in and part of it was washed off due to landslides triggered by incessant rains on Thursday.

A truck and a car also fell through the caved-in portion of the road. However, no casualty was reported.

The landslide at Lumshnong has disrupted vehicular movement along the highway and people have been advised to avoid taking the route, said the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) officials.

“Efforts are on to clear the blocked route and necessary assistance is being provided to stranded passengers,” they added.

The Lumshong toll plaza has also been damaged due to the landslide. Sources said the vehicular movement has been heavily affected and connectivity to Silchar and areas beyond has been cut off.

The authorities are currently allowing only restricted movement along the highway, which connects Southern Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur to the rest of the country.

Deputy Commissioner of the District, Abhilash Banarwal informed that all of the damaged routes have been closed to avoid any mishapenning or loss of lives.

He also advised the everyday commuters of the affected roads to tread carefully and avoid any unnecessary travel till normalcy is in place.

Suprintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills, Jagpal Singh Dhonoa also reported that there have not been any loss of lives. He also informed that police personnel have been deployed to the affected area for inspection.

Meghalaya has been hit by intense rain, floods and landslides this year, leaving several people displaced.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cherrapunji recorded a massive 811.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Wednesday, the highest in June since 1995.

The Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has directed the Deputy Commissioners of all the districts of the state to take necessary and rescue operations by convening an emergency meeting through video conferencing regarding the devastation caused by heavy rains.

On Wednesday, the Nongsning to Ratacherra route was damaged.
