DIBRUGARH, March 20: The electoral battle in Upper Assam gathered momentum on Friday with senior leaders across party lines filing nominations, signalling the start of a high-stakes contest ahead of the Assembly elections.
Leading the show was state Power Minister and four-time MLA Prasanta Phukan, who filed his nomination from Dibrugarh amid a massive show of strength. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran, who began his electoral journey in 2006 with a slender 175-vote win, is now aiming for a record fifth consecutive term after securing a commanding margin of over 38,000 votes in 2021.
Confident of retaining the seat, Phukan said, “Looking at the ground reality and the work our government has done, I am confident of winning by a massive margin this time.”
The day also saw key opposition faces entering the fray. Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi filed his nomination from the newly created Khowang constituency, seeking an electoral breakthrough after falling short in the 2021 elections despite his prominence in the anti-CAA movement.
Adding to the contest, Congress candidate Pranjal Ghatowar, son of former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, filed his papers from Chabua-Lahowal, looking to bounce back after his defeat in the now-defunct Moran seat in 2021.
Meanwhile, former Congress minister and four-time MLA Pranati Phukan entered the race from Naharkatia, attempting a political comeback after back-to-back losses in the last two Assembly polls.
With Assam set to vote on April 9, Friday’s nominations underline the intensifying contest in Upper Assam, where seasoned leaders and emerging contenders are set for closely watched battles.
