Shillong, July 24: The Hid Foundation Shillong has announced the formation of a new unit aimed at strengthening the agriculture and horticulture sectors in Meghalaya.
In a statement issued on Friday, the organisation said the new unit, named Society for Organic Farming and Agricultural Marketing (SOFAM), was approved during an Executive Board meeting held on July 23.
According to the foundation, the initiative is part of its ongoing project titled “Providing Sustainable Livelihood and Income Opportunities through Improved and Scientific Methods of Organic Production of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) along with Certification as Organic Produce.”
The organisation said SOFAM will undertake initiatives to support farmers through organic certification, capacity building, marketing and promotion, and by creating market linkages for agricultural produce.
The Hid Foundation stated that the formation of the growers’ group is intended to promote natural and organic farming practices in Meghalaya and strengthen livelihood opportunities for farmers across the state.
