Guwahati, May 9: Assam caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday (May 10) at 11:15 am to stake claim to form the NDA government for a third consecutive term in the state.
According to party sources, Sarma is set to be elected as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term. The new NDA government is scheduled to take oath on May 12.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power with a commanding majority, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party with 82 seats, while its allies — the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — secured 10 seats each.
Sarma on Saturday met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in Guwahati, who attended the BJP Legislature Party meeting as Observer and Co-Observer respectively.
As per constitutional protocol, Sarma had submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the AGP has unanimously backed Sarma’s candidature for the post of Chief Minister.
