Namsai, July 27: “I was hit by 18 bullets, but I had only one thought — we must win,” recalled Kargil war hero Naik Digender Singh, as he stood before a packed audience in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, on the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The decorated veteran, a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra and Sena Medal, was the central figure at Saturday’s commemoration, embodying the spirit of courage and sacrifice that defines India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War.
Singh, who served with the 2nd Rajputana Rifles — the regiment that famously captured the strategic peak of Tololing — shared his emotional account of the battle. “We fought with determination and bravery. Many of my comrades laid down their lives for Bharat Mata. It’s because of their supreme sacrifice that we are here today,” he said, urging students in the audience to embrace patriotism and serve the nation.
Fellow veteran Naik Prahlad Singh, who also fought in Kargil, both serving as living reminders of the resilience and valour of Indian soldiers, was present on the occasion.
Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik (Retd) attended the event as the chief guest and paid tribute to the fallen soldiers. “Today, we remember our brave hearts whose sacrifices made this day possible. Kargil Vijay Diwas is a reminder of their unmatched courage,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also honoured the martyrs and praised the dedication of the armed forces.
The event was organised by the Assam Rifles in collaboration with the Arunachal University of Studies at the Multipurpose Hall in Namsai. Among the dignitaries present were Prof. Ajey Jha, Vice-Chancellor of the university; Namsai MLA Zingnu Namchoom; Deputy Commissioner C.R. Khampa; and Brigadier Surabjit Singh of 25 Sector Assam Rifles.
