Shillong, July 10: In a major boost to maternal healthcare in Meghalaya, Sohiong Community Health Centre (CHC) has successfully performed its first-ever Caesarean section, enabling a mother to safely deliver a healthy baby girl without being referred to a higher medical facility.
The baby, weighing 2.3 kg, was delivered successfully in what health officials described as a milestone in strengthening emergency obstetric care closer to rural communities.
The surgery was led by Dr. W. Nongkhlaw, Obstetrician, and Dr. P.M. Lyngdoh, Anaesthetist, with support from Dr. Arkham, Dr. Bryan, and nursing teams from Mawphlang CHC, Sohiong CHC, and Tirot Sing Memorial Hospital, Mairang.
The successful procedure marks a significant expansion of healthcare services at Sohiong CHC, reducing the need for expectant mothers requiring emergency Caesarean deliveries to travel long distances to referral hospitals.
Health officials credited the achievement to coordinated teamwork and the growing capabilities of Meghalaya’s public health system in providing timely, quality maternal care closer to people’s homes.
The successful surgery is expected to improve access to life-saving obstetric services for women in Sohiong and surrounding areas, strengthening efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal health risks in rural Meghalaya.
