Guwahati, July 11: In a significant political development in Nagaland, the Rising People’s Party (RPP) on Saturday formally merged with the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF), with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio describing the move as the beginning of a “new chapter” for the state.

Announcing the merger on X, Rio said the NPF welcomed the RPP with a shared commitment to serve the people “with unity, purpose and dedication.”

“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter. @npf_fna welcomes @RPP_Nagaland as we come together with a shared commitment to serve the people with unity, purpose, and dedication. This merger reflects our collective resolve to strengthen our efforts in the service of our people,” he said.

Rio termed the merger a convergence of “people, ideas, experiences and aspirations” in the larger interest of the Naga people.

The merger was formally announced at a public programme in Kohima.

The RPP, formed on October 2, 2020, and registered with the Election Commission of India in June 2021, was led by Joel Naga and had positioned itself as a regional alternative, focusing on clean governance and electoral reforms.

The merger was officially declared by NPF secretary general and Advisor Achumbemo Kikon, who welcomed the incoming leaders and party members. An oath-taking ceremony for the new entrants was administered by NPF working president Pusazo Luruo.
