HNLC denies role in sending extortion letters to civilians and businessmen

Shillong, July 25: The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has denied involvement in sending demand notes or involved in extorting money from civilians including businessmen from Khasi & Jaiñtia Hills.

This came a day after a news report surfaced that the banned outfit allegedly sending demand notes and extortion letter to one civilian.

In a statement, HNLC General secretary cum Publicity secretary, Saiñkupar Nongtraw said, “the HNLC would like to state that it is the handiwork of miscreants and that the under signed are not in any way connected to the HNLC”.

Nongtraw warns strict action will be taken to anybody involved in extortion using the outfit name.

“If found then the HNLC will be compelled to take action as it corrupts the sole  nature of the ongoing Peace talks…As the peace talks are progressing forward it could also be a step towards derailing the entire process by people having vested interests”, further stated Nongtraw.

“No agreement has been signed so far between the Government of India , Government of Meghalaya  and the HNLC and neither  sides have not created any attempt to damage  it.  Everything has been adhered to as a mark of respect from the HNLC to the GOI and GOM not to indulge  into any kind of illegal activities”, added the statement.

Urging the authorities to take the matter seriously, HNLC said, “law enforcement agencies should take up the matter seriously from the source of the fake letterhead and get the culprits arrested so as to enable a peaceful atmosphere for the Peace talks to proceed”.

The banned military outfit further informed that they have assigned their own “intelligence wing” to find out the persons involved.

However, the HNLC said that people can contribute to the Council in the form of donation.
