Hundreds of IDPs stage protest in Imphal over delay in rehabilitation

Must read

Imphal, Jan 12: Hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) on Monday took to the streets of Imphal, protesting delays in their rehabilitation and attempting to march towards Lok Bhavan. The demonstrators carried festoons and placards reading, “Response to our December memorandum.”

The protest was organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) along with IDP groups—unified civil society platforms advocating the territorial integrity, cultural identity, and social harmony of Manipur.

In a memorandum submitted earlier, the IDPs demanded a time-bound, written roadmap for their resettlement, accusing the government of prolonged inaction and indifference to their plight.

“We are demanding proper resettlement in our original homes after prolonged displacement caused by the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. The government has failed to act, and rehabilitation deadlines set for December 2025 are fast approaching,” an IDP representative said.

The memorandum further stated that IDPs have been holding sit-in protests and submitting reminder memoranda daily to the Governor and the Chief Secretary regarding the government’s assurance to resettle them by December 2025. However, they alleged that no response has been received so far.
