TURA, Feb 21: In a push to widen career horizons for young girls in the Garo Hills, the Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal (HVPM), Amravati, in collaboration with its Tura-based alumni, conducted a comprehensive awareness and career counselling programme at Government Girls Higher Secondary School on Saturday.

The programme focused on emerging opportunities in physical education, encouraging students to explore professional avenues beyond conventional career paths. Speakers highlighted how the discipline is evolving into a dynamic sector offering roles in sports science, coaching, fitness training, sports management, physiotherapy, and competitive athletics.

Delivering the keynote address, Mongera M. Marak, District Sports Officer for South Garo Hills, stressed the importance of integrating sports into mainstream education. He urged students to consider physical education as a serious academic and professional pursuit rather than limiting themselves to traditional career choices.

Resource persons Dr. W. Kendal Singh and Augustine A. Sangma addressed practical challenges facing the sector in the region, including gaps in infrastructure and the need for sustained student participation to strengthen grassroots sports development.

Adding academic perspective, Daimei Daimeilan, Assistant Professor at the Degree College of Physical Education, Amravati, worked to dispel common misconceptions about the field. He emphasized that physical education is not merely recreational but a structured discipline that builds physical fitness, leadership, and mental resilience while opening doors to diverse professional careers.

The session aimed to equip students with a clearer roadmap for combining academics and athletics, positioning sports education as a viable and rewarding career option in Meghalaya.

The programme also observed a moment of silence to pay tribute to Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, Member of Parliament from Shillong, following his sudden demise on February 19.

Organisers described the initiative as part of a broader effort to promote sports education awareness in Northeast India and inspire greater female participation in professional sports and allied fields.
