Shillong, May 23: NGOs on Sunday demanded inquiry into the incident that led to the collapse of the dome of the new Meghalaya Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong Township.

“We demand the government to institute an inquiry into the incident and to take action against the engineers, officers, contractors and others even if they are politicians or ministers,” Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) general secretary Roykupar Synrem said in a statement.

He said the government should also appoint an independent agency to certify the safety of the new Assembly building to ensure there is no future mishap.

“The Assembly Secretariat should not entertain any demand of the contractor for extra expenditure as those responsible for the incident should take care of the funds required to complete the construction,” Synrem said.

Expressing concern, working president of the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Dundee Cliff Khongsit said that they will seek the intervention of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) which is preparing all Audit reports of the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).

He said the federation also demands the state government to blacklist the Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd, which is implementing the project.
