Dibrugarh, July 19: A powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was recovered from the Nongtaw village area in Piyong Circle of Namsai district, Arunachal Pradesh, on Saturday.
Security forces have intensified counter-insurgency operations across eastern Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Assam following credible intelligence inputs about the presence of multiple hit squads of the banned outfit ULFA (Independent) in the region.
“During one such counter-insurgency operation carried out by the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the CRPF and Arunachal Pradesh Police, a powerful IED was recovered from the Nongtaw village area in Piyong Circle,” said an official.

The IED was found near a culvert and is suspected to have been planted to target security personnel. Sources indicated that intelligence inputs had earlier warned of ULFA (I) squads infiltrating the region to execute terror and subversive activities in the run-up to Independence Day celebrations.
Bomb disposal squads have reached the site and are in the process of defusing the device, officials added.
On Thursday, the Assam Rifles had also recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from the Namdapha National Park in Changlang district.
