Shillong, July 19: In a spirited effort to promote environmental awareness, the Rotary Club of Shillong Heritage (RCSH) organised a tree plantation drive at Pine Mount School, Shillong, on Saturday morning under the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.”
The campaign encourages individuals to plant trees in honour of their mothers, blending environmental responsibility with emotional significance.
The event began at in the morning and witnessed active participation from forest officials, school authorities, Rotary Club members, and 50 resident boarders of the school. A total of 76 saplings were planted, including Ligustrum Soh Paiat, Camellia japonica, and Jacaranda mimosifolia, chosen for their ecological benefits and visual appeal.
The plantation drive saw strong collaboration between the Social Forestry Division and Pine Mount School. Divisional Forest Officer H. Lato emphasised the symbolic importance of the initiative, stating that trees, like mothers, nurture life and deserve protection. She said the campaign served as a reminder of our duty to care for nature with the same devotion shown to us by our mothers.
President of the Rotary Club of Shillong Heritage, Gayatri Marnie Batkhar, and Environment Committee Chairperson, Binayak Dutta, reiterated the club’s commitment to environmental action. Dutta called on the youth to step up in preserving nature, highlighting that small steps like these could lead to a larger change.
Principal B. Nongbri expressed her appreciation for the joint initiative, noting that it not only beautifies the school campus but also inspires students to become stewards of the environment. Students were encouraged to care for the saplings as part of their environmental education.
As part of the event, 105 packets of refreshments were distributed among the students, teachers, forestry staff, and club members. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, marking the day as a meaningful step in fostering green consciousness and community collaboration.
