Shillong, July 19: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong affirmed the government’s continued commitment to improving sanitation standards across the state.
Shillong was named the cleanest city in Meghalaya in the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 rankings, but was ranked 763rd nationally.
Despite the shortcomings, Shillong was recognised as a “Promising Swachh Shehar” under a new category introduced this year. Top-performing cities from each state were given this distinction—34 cities nationwide earned the tag, signalling notable improvements in cleanliness and sanitation.
“This is not the end of the story just because we received an award. Cleanliness is an ongoing process, and we will continue our efforts,” Tynsong said.
He emphasised that the government’s aim is not limited to Shillong or a few urban centres, but to uplift cleanliness and sanitation levels in every part of the state.
Many smaller towns in Meghalaya — including Nongstoin, Mairang, and Baghmara — ranked significantly lower, highlighting the need for targeted infrastructure upgrades and behavioural change initiatives.
