Longwa meeting intensifies India-Myanmar border vigilance

Kohima, July 28: India and Myanmar have agreed to step up coordination along their shared border following a post-level meeting at Longwa village in Nagaland’s Mon district on Sunday, with officials focusing on cross-border security challenges, including illegal movement, drones and other emerging threats.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Myanmar Army, Yenchong District Police and the Assam Rifles. Discussions centred on illegal cross-border movement, drug and arms smuggling, intelligence sharing, implementation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), and measures to counter threats, including the movement of unmanned aerial vehicles.

The discussions come just weeks after India and Myanmar agreed to deepen security cooperation and intelligence sharing during the 23rd National Level Meeting in New Delhi, where both sides reviewed counter-insurgency operations and cross-border crimes, including the trafficking of arms and narcotics.

Longwa, in Nagaland’s Mon district, occupies a unique strategic position, with nearly half the village in India and the other half in Myanmar, separated only by an unfenced boundary stretching about four kilometres. For generations, residents have depended on close coordination between security agencies on both sides to curb criminal activities and ensure peaceful management of this sensitive frontier.

Officials familiar with the developments said such meetings play a crucial role in intelligence sharing, early warning mechanisms and tracking the movement of anti-social elements along the border. They also help prevent trans-border crimes, including the illegal movement of people, arms and other contraband, while strengthening cooperation between local authorities and maintaining harmony among communities living on either side of the border.
