Tynsong assures Umiam bridge design will incorporate all safety measures

Must read

Shillong, July 19: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has assured that the ongoing construction of the new bridge near Umiam Dam incorporates all necessary safety measures, including the risk of water discharge from the dam.

The bridge, being constructed by the PWD around 100 metres downstream of the Umiam Dam, has raised public concerns about potential flooding during dam water releases. Addressing these concerns, Tynsong, who also oversees the PWD (Roads), said the department had conducted proper due diligence before initiating the project.

“Yes, that has been done. Due diligence has been carried out, and our architect and designer have considered all such issues,” he stated. “We have already raised the height of the bridge that is under construction.”

Tynsong also provided an update on the alternative road from the Mawlai Bypass to Umroi. He informed that a key bridge along the route is nearly 90% complete.

“Our target is to complete it by December. But if not, then definitely before March next year, the road should be ready for use,” he said.
