Shillong, Sept 5: The Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong) has retained its place in the top 100 of the management category in the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), emerging once again as the only institution from Meghalaya to do so.
The institute has been ranked 38th this year, its lowest position since first entering the rankings in 2016. Last year, IIM Shillong was placed 24th. Over the years, it has consistently figured in the top 100—26th in both 2023 and 2022, 23rd in 2021, 30th in 2020, 24th in 2019, 26th in 2018, 21st in 2017, and 20th in 2016.
The institute’s Graduation Outcomes (GO) remain its strongest pillar, improving steadily to cross 95 in 2025. Other parameters such as Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RPC), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Peer Perception have remained largely stable, reflecting sustained academic quality and institutional processes.
While IIM Shillong’s scores have been stable and consistently strong, particularly in Graduation Outcomes, the entry of newer institutions with higher improvements in other parameters has led to tougher competition in the rankings.
This trend highlights the growing intensity among Indian management institutes to excel not only in graduation outcomes but also in research, inclusivity, and overall academic perception.

Established in 2007, IIM Shillong is the first Indian Institute of Management in the Northeast and continues to serve as the region’s only representative among the country’s top-ranked management schools. It is also known as the “Campus in the Clouds”.
“The institute has seen steady growth in student strength. Its flagship two-year postgraduate programme admitted 281 students in 2022–23 and 382 in 2023–24. Placement outcomes remain strong, with the median salary for the 2023–24 graduating batch at ₹25.67 lakh per annum, slightly lower than the previous year’s ₹26.09 lakh” according to the 2025 NIRF report
The institute has also expanded its research and outreach. It currently has 78 doctoral scholars, and in 2023–24 it conducted 21 executive and management development programmes with over 1,100 participants. Consultancy and sponsored research projects added to its academic footprint.

The business school has been expanding its international academic presence by signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with leading institutions across Europe, Africa, and North America. These strategic partnerships reinforce IIM Shillong’s dedication to global collaboration in management education, research, and cultural exchange. The institute says by facilitating global learning opportunities, it aims to enhance the academic and professional horizons of its students and faculty.
In fact, the PGP 2025–27 batch represents a diverse mix of 58% male and 42% female students, with 54% coming from non-engineering backgrounds. The average age stands at 25.2 years, and 72% of the cohort has prior work experience, mainly between one and three years. Students hail from 22 states and 4 Union Territories, adding to the cultural and academic diversity of the batch.
