Dibrugarh, June 8: As challenges mount in the face of the catastrophic landslides across Dibang Valley due to relentless torrential rains across the region, devastating homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands, the Indian Army is adopting innovative means to aid the state administration to ensure stranded villagers get essential supplies, bolster rescue operations and restore connectivity at the earliest.
In the recent rains, the village of Athunli in Dibang Valley has been particularly hard hit, with 16 homes completely swept away. The nearby Mawali village also found itself cut off from essential supplies, leaving six people, including three children, an elderly individual, and a woman, stranded as all access routes were blocked by landslides and damaged bridges.
Responding swiftly and innovatively, the Indian Army utilized drones for the first time in Arunachal Pradesh for flood relief and rescue operations, providing crucial aid to villagers stranded in Mawali in Dibang Valley.
A specialized Army team successfully deployed drones to airdrop vital rations, medicines, and other essential supplies to the stranded individuals in Mawali. This crucial delivery helped sustain them until a team from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) could reach the village as part of the broader rescue and relief operation.
In addition to the drone operations, the Army also established a rope line across the river, creating a makeshift ropeway. This has enabled a continuous flow of essential supplies and facilitated evacuations, further aiding the joint operation between the Indian Army and the district administration.
