Agartala, June 8: In a major crackdown on electricity bill defaulters, the Tripura Power Department has disconnected power lines and imposed hefty fines on thousands of non-paying consumers, as nearly 60% of the state’s electricity users reportedly fail to pay their bills.
According to officials of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), of the 9.87 lakh electricity consumers in the state, only 4.32 lakh pay their bills on time. The majority of defaulters are located in rural and interior regions.
“Lakhs of consumers have not been paying their bills regularly. We have taken strict action by disconnecting power lines and levying heavy fines. In many cases, our staff faced resistance and even attacks while carrying out disconnections,” said a TSECL official.
Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the state is simultaneously promoting clean energy alternatives through the central government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Under this initiative, rooftop solar power systems are being installed in thousands of households with significant subsidies.
“My last power bill before switching to solar was Rs 8,726. Now, after installation, I’ve received a refund of Rs 763,” said Nath, citing his personal example to highlight the benefits of solar adoption.
Over the past two years, the electricity supply to thousands of defaulters has been cut off as part of the state’s efforts to improve revenue collection and reduce losses from electricity theft and non-payment.
The minister urged citizens to pay their bills on time and discourage power theft to help the state maintain a stable and reliable power supply.
